Who We Are

Referred to as Berneslai in the Domesday Book of 1086, what was once a small settlement has evolved into one of the four Metropolitan Boroughs in South Yorkshire covering 127 square miles and home to around 230,000 people. Situated in the foothills of the Pennines, the old market town of Penistone, some 660 feet above sea level and 6 miles to the west of Barnsley, is the focal point of the rural half of the Borough.

The Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council is divided into 21 electoral wards each represented by 3 Councillors. At the time of writing, May 2008, the Council is controlled by the Labour Party and the Conservative Group has 6 members returned by the Penistone East and Penistone West wards.
